Urban Brand Strategy

IDENTITY DESIGN, VISUAL DESIGN, ART DIRECTION

My challenge was creating a visual identity for an agency that’s work is kind of hard to explain. Department of Here is consulting firm out to discover a places history, character, and future to reveal it’s story — because places are people too. The Dept. of Here’s logo is one of crisp and elegant lines that encompass the three characters that make up their name, like a family or a community, or a neighborhood. The signature coral red symbolizes energy, commanding attention while the soft grey cools the palette down. This actually inspired me to create my own palette for the city I live in, San Francisco. The pristine, but approachable aesthetic extends to their website made all the more friendly by their casual and a bit quirky brand voice.

DEPT. OF RIGHT HERE

The imagery of feet standing in places familiar and not is symbolic of pausing to appreciate the place you’re in and getting to know it. The concept when combined with the logo placed over the image gives the impression that one is standing at Department of Here’s doorstep. Both stock and personal photography were sourced for this element of Dept of Here’s identity.

WRITTEN IN RED

Where there isn’t a logo placed over the imagery there is ‘highlighted’ type used over a grayscale image, letting the bright and warm red take the spotlight framed by an abstracted background.
